THE MAKING OF

THE MAKING OF

Stories captivate us. We encounter them daily — in news, conversation and on our screens. I'm intrigued by stories of people, places and things and I enjoy observing how things are made (see @hegi_designhouse crafting iconic furniture designs). These moments can be hypnotising and the curiosity draws us in further. The credits rolling at the end of a film also has a story connection, for example in Loki (Season 1 & 2) using effective execution, minimal type, and capturing unique objects from the narrative, they can make what is usually a dull credits sequence look fairly compelling. I studied fine art and graphic design in college and my photographic explorations have also shaped my understanding of experimentation and narrative. Studying Drama as part of my degree level became an unexpected addition to the plot. The experience of script writing for group performances opened up a whole new appreciation for expression, emotion and catharsis.

I also love to experiment. I think this is what makes an artist / photographer / coder etc. Test, play and explore — and see what happens.

AND I LOVE A GOOD BRIEF!

AND I LOVE A GOOD BRIEF!

I’ve been in the industry for 19 years and worked with some exceptionally talented and professional people. As a UX/UI Designer I cover wireframes, user flows, apps, responsive design and more. Figma is my go-to software, building design systems and interactive/animated prototypes. Photoshop and Illustrator are still an essential part of the toolkit. I also support the production of art and graphics. With the growing support of AI tools, I think this will somewhat improve and challenge the workflow. A good eye for direction is imperative at this point in time. Framer will also be a work in progress. I have been working with this platform for almost a year.

Depending on the project I am usually provided with a base concept outlining the project objectives and deliverables. All brand assets (fonts, guidelines etc) are requested before kickoff. Ideation and discovery can be part of my workflow. At other times there are strict deliveries, and teams must work closely to achieve various milestones from user testing to final launch.

UX wireframes can certainly adapt and change overtime. Setting the UI and creative foundations early on is paramount ie. grids, component libraries etc. My preference is to use components and variants, mainly for a clean and efficient workflow. It is an iterative process, therefore the more organised the file, the better! Figma is an ideal space for team members to review and export assets for developers as needed.

Many projects I've worked on can't be shared due to NDA. But if you would like more information please email me julietlall@gmail.com.

The art of image creation

The art of image creation

My interest in digital photography began almost 23 years ago. My practice has developed while travelling to various locations such as Mexico, Morocco, Paris, San Francisco, Thailand, Vietnam, Colombia and China.

I have a keen interest in features such as lines, patterns, colours and texture and love to capture landscapes, architecture, nature, portraits and much more. Smaller photographic gigs include Art Fund, Beyond Twenty Ltd, P&G and Jaguar, as well as countless retouching and Photoshop compositing work.

The Diploma in Photography was completed in 2022 at the British Academy of Photography with Distinction. The course has heightened my technical awareness while elevating conceptual ideas for art. My studies and collections involve juxtaposed textures — the polar extremes of natural and man-made structures is an intriguing comparison of originality and tradition. I use a combination of Lightroom, Photoshop, Facet and Illustrator to create rich artistic compositions. My experience has influenced and supported digital design work over the years. Understanding various photographic principles, equipment, and terminology can support activities such image sourcing, lighting, colour theory, composition and… storytelling.
